SIGNS YOU NEED TO BRING YOUR CAR IN FOR REPAIRS

Mechanic working on an engine

The best way to ensure your car is working at its best is to bring it in to be checked by a professional mechanic. However, sometimes, even the most reliable cars can experience problems, and it is always advisable to get them checked out sooner rather than later.

At Change Auto & Diesel, our auto repair experts in Calgary are here to assist you. We understand that not everyone knows the intricacies of car maintenance and repair. Luckily, you don’t need to be an expert to ensure your car is getting the best service it can. With a little common sense and a few tips, you can tell when you should bring your car in to get it checked. Here are just five easy signs that your car needs auto repair services:

Check engine light is on. This one should be obvious, but it needs to be said. Modern cars are complex, efficient machines that are built to last. Moreover, they’re now equipped with advanced computers and self-diagnostic systems. If a check engine light is on, it may not mean that your car is in serious trouble, but it means that something isn’t as it should be.

Smoke is coming out of your engine or exhaust. If your engine starts producing smoke or more smoke than usual starts coming out of your exhaust, it probably means that something is burning that shouldn’t be, and you should visit your auto repair specialists in Calgary.

Any change in how your car accelerates. If your car changes how it accelerates, it’s a sign of trouble. Whether that means sluggish acceleration or sudden spurts of acceleration that you didn’t cause, it’s probably an indicator you should bring your car in for a check. If your car starts behaving in ways you’re not in control of, it’s a genuine hazard, and you should bring your vehicle in for a check-up.

Anything leaking. There are five essential liquids in your car that it needs to run: engine oil, engine coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and gasoline (there’s also windshield wiper fluid, but that’s not strictly necessary). None of these should leak, so if you regularly see puddles near your parked car, it’s a sign of trouble. (Though you should know that your air conditioning will probably produce a little water in the summer—that isn’t a problem.)

Your brake light is on. Maintaining your brakes is integral to the safety of your vehicle and, more importantly, your passengers. If you notice that your brake dashboard lights are blinking in either amber or red, or you hear a grinding or squealing sound while braking, it is time to bring your vehicle to be looked at. Our technicians will assess the health of your brakes and ensure that we properly calibrate them so that you and your car can run smoothly.

Troublesome exhaust. Exhaust changes can often signal underlying auto issues. If your exhaust becomes unusually dirty and black or emits strong odours, it could indicate a clogged or damaged filtration system. This might involve the catalytic converter or another component, so it’s best to have a mechanic inspect it promptly.

Diagnostic lights. Nowadays, most vehicles come with engine diagnostics or check engine lights, which beam after reaching a specific mileage for routine checkups. The car's computer module may sometimes malfunction and illuminate the light. These lights indicate something within your engine might be wrong. Generally, if a diagnostic light accompanies other indications like inadequate performance or strange noises, we suggest taking up the issue with a Change Auto & Diesel professional.

Engine making more noise than usual. Automotive engines should run smoothly. Some may become noisier with age, but unexpectedly loud noises or challenges turning the engine could indicate issues. Always check for sudden gurgling or growling sounds when your engine is idling. If so, visit an auto shop for an engine inspection.

Worn-out brakes. Brake components naturally degrade over time. If your brakes are less responsive or produce screeching, squealing, or vibrating noises, it’s likely time to replace the brake pads or address other underlying issues. Shaking during braking could also point to problems with brake fluid, alignment, or worn pads—best resolved by an expert mechanic.

Steering problems. If your steering wheel gets hard to control or less smooth, the steering components must be checked for low-power steering fluid or any other malfunction. Any issue affecting your ability to steer the car needs prompt attention from an auto repair shop.

Alignment problems. A rough or uneven ride often signals wheel alignment issues, particularly at higher speeds. Alignment can be affected by routine wear, sudden impacts, or accidents. If your car’s handling feels off, visiting a professional for realignment can quickly restore a smooth, stable ride.

Poor fuel economy. Do you think a bad fuel economy occurs due to the age of the vehicle? The opposite is true. Poorly maintained cars will likely have a bad fuel economy as their mileage reduces with time. Drivers who maintain their cars according to schedule will surely enjoy better fuel economy for a long time. Also, lower fuel economy can be caused by varied engine problems, such as damaged or clogged fuel injectors, worn air filters that need replacing, a dirty oxygen sensor, and worn piston rings.
